PTA 2710 - Clinical Internship II

 Reflection:

This internship was my third and final clinical experience while attending Salt Lake Community College's Physical Therapist Assistant Program.  It was in an acute rehab department of a hospital and the majority of the patients I worked with were suffering from neurological conditions.  It was challenging at times, my role as a PTA was to get the patients up and begin rehabilitation interventions.  Some of the patients were very involved, requiring assistance with bed mobility, transfers, and ambulation or wheelchair mobility.  Some patients had conditions that resulted in paralysis.  These patient required education and training in order to become more functionally independent.

I really enjoyed working along side some amazing PTs, PTAs, OTs, and COTAs.  It was a great experience, and I learned so much from them.  My experiences at this clinical site have given me more direction in the type of setting I would like to work at.  Although working in acute rehab with patients recovering from neurological disorders can be difficult at times, it can also be very rewarding and interesting.  I really think that this is the type of work I will be good at, and I will enjoy working within this setting.

One of the homework assignments I was required to do during this internship was to critique a research article that had relevance to the case report I was completing on one of my patients.  My case report was on a patient who was in acute rehab because of Guillain-Barre Syndrome.  I have included the research article and my critique below:
