Physical Therapy For Specific Clientele

 Reflection:

This class covered many diagnoses and treatment interventions.  Through the lectures and readings we learned about the effects of certain diseases and disorders, and in the labs we learned treatment techniques.  Because physical therapy is used to treat patients with multiple health issues from cardiovascular disease and cancer to cerebral palsy and so much more, it was helpful to learn about the diseases/disorders and how physical therapy is incorporated into the treatments.

Throughout the semester we were assigned case studies to practice looking at the patient's problems related to physical therapy and come up with appropriate exercises for the patients.  I have included one below.

12 year old girl with a dx of Down syndrome is seen in PT 2x/wk at her school. Child is s/p R femur fx and immobilization device was taken off 2 wks ago. MD orders strengthening and cardiovascular endurance activities. Child has mild scoliosis and minimal learning deficits. Child is moderately obese and c/o pain consistently during tx. PT LTGs = PT will ambulate 100 yds with neutral gait pattern in 4 months; pt will demonstrate 20 minutes of physical activity in order to participate with peers in community activities w/o SOB in 4 months; pt transition from sit to stand to sit independently in 2 months.
